Ah, Amrum! The German North Sea island is the perfect destination for those looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Amrum lies in the North Sea between the mainland and the larger Sylt island. Here you will learn, how you can reach this beautiful island for your North Sea vacation.
Travel to Amrum by car
If you travel by car, you first drive to the harbor town of Dagebüll, which is located in the northernmost part of Germany. From there you can take the car ferry to the island. There are several shipping companies that go from Dagebüll to Amrum including the Wyker Dampfschiffs-Reederei (Wyk Steamship Shipping Company) Föhr-Amrum GmbH (WDR) and Adler Schiffe GmbH & Co. KG. The trip takes about 90 minutes and you have to buy a ticket in advance.
If you want to go to Amrum by car, you should book your ferry ticket in time, especially in high season. Also, parking on the island is limited, so you should reserve a parking space in time. Once you arrive on Amrum, you can explore the island at your leisure and a car is a great way to do that.
How do I get to Amrum by ferry?
First of all, there are two harbors to sail from: Dagebüll and Wyk on Föhr. If you're coming from the mainland, Dagebüll is the best choice - it's only about a two-hour drive from Hamburg and there's a parking lot right next to the ferry terminal. If you're coming from another island, Wyk on Föhr the right port.
When you arrive at the port, you need to buy a ferry ticket. Don't worry, it's not expensive and you can buy it either online or at the terminal. If you want to take your car with you, you should reserve a place beforehand. Ferries leave every hour during the day and every two hours at night, so you won't have to wait long.
The Amrum ferry has two decks with seating on both levels. You can either sit inside or outside, whichever you prefer. If you're lucky enough to catch a sunny day, sitting outside is highly recommended - there's nothing better than the sea breeze on your face! If you suffer from seasickness, don't worry - the ferry doesn't usually rock that much.
When you arrive, you will find yourself in the port of Wittdün. From here you can either rent a bike, take a cab or take the bus to your accommodation. But be careful: if you come in high season, you may have to wait a little longer for a cab or a bus.
Arrival by train
If you are coming from further away, you can take the train to the nearby town of Niebüll, which is connected to the German rail network. From Niebüll you can take a bus or a cab to Dagebüll and from there a ferry to Amrum.
The train ride from major German cities like Berlin or Hamburg takes between three and five hours, depending on the departure point. But it's a great way to see the countryside and the small towns and villages along the way.
Arrival by plane
For those who prefer to fly, there are several options. The nearest airports are Sylt and Hamburg. From Sylt airport you can take the ferry directly to Amrum, the crossing takes about 90 minutes. From Hamburg airport you take the train to Niebüll and then follow the steps described above.
