The history of the Langeoog ferry

The history of the Langeoog ferry dates back to the early 1900s and has been an important part of the island's transportation system for more than a century. Before the first ferry service, the North Sea island could only be reached by boat or via a narrow path that emerged at low tide. For visitors, Langeoog was therefore difficult to reach and horse-drawn carriages were the only means of transport.

The first ferry service to Langeoog was established in 1906. The ferry service was operated by the shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd. The ferry, named MS Langeoog I, had a capacity of about 250 passengers and was powered by a steam engine. Initially, the Langeooger operated only in the summer months, when the flow of tourists was at its greatest. Gradually, the operation was extended to the whole year and the departure frequency was increased.

In the early years, the ferry service faced some difficulties, such as navigating the shallow waters around the island. To solve this problem, the shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd put a new ferry, the MS Langeoog II, into service in 1910. The new one was larger than its predecessor and could carry more passengers and cargo. It was also equipped with a more powerful steam engine, which enabled it to sail effortlessly through the shallow waters.

The Langeoog ferries played an important role in the development of tourism on the island. With the increasing popularity of Langeoog as a Vacation destination demand for a more efficient and reliable ferry service also increased. To meet this demand, the shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd put two new ships into service in the 1920s, the MS Langeoog III and the MS Langeoog IV.

These were significantly larger than their predecessors and could carry around 500 passengers. They were equipped with modern amenities such as restaurants, cabins and lounges and offered passengers a comfortable and luxurious travel experience. They also had powerful engines that enabled them to traverse the shallow waters around the island with ease.

Ferry operations on Langeoog continued to develop over the years with the introduction of new and more modern ferries. In the 1950s, the shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd put one into service, the MS Langeoog V. This was powered by diesel engines, which were more efficient and reliable than the steam engines of the earlier ones.

The shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd continued the ferry service on Langeoog until 1957. In that year, Deutsche Bundesbahn took over the ferry service. The new operators maintained and modernized the existing ferry fleet to offer a more efficient and reliable ferry service.

In the 1970s, ferry operations on Langeoog faced a new challenge. The ever-growing made it difficult to navigate the shallow waters around the island. To meet this challenge, a new ferry terminal was built in Bensersiel, the mainland port from which they departed. The new terminal had modern facilities and a dredging system to deepen the harbor waters so that the larger ones could dock safely.

Today, the ferry service on Langeoog is operated by Aktien-Gesellschaft Ems (AGE). The company has a modern ferry fleet, which ensures regular and reliable ferry service between Langeoog and Bensersiel. The modern ones are equipped with modern facilities such as air-conditioned cabins, restaurants and lounges, offering passengers a comfortable and pleasant travel experience.
