Friedrichstadt: A brief history

Friedrichstadt was founded in 1621 by the Dutch-born Prince Friedrich III of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp. The prince wanted to promote trade with the Netherlands and built the town in the Dutch architectural style. In honor of Prince Frederick III, the city was initially named "Frederick City." The city grew rapidly and many Dutch merchants settled in the area, contributing to the city's economic prosperity.

During the Napoleonic Wars, Friedrichstadt was occupied by French soldiers and the Dutch-style buildings were damaged. After the war, the town was slowly rebuilt, but it never quite regained its former prosperity.

Geography and climate

Friedrichstadt is located on the banks of the Eider River, which flows in the North Sea flows. The city is located about 85 kilometers north of the city of Hamburg and 20 kilometers east of the North Sea coast.
