Journey to Amrum

Ferry, arrival & prices for the crossing

The journey to Amrum starts with a ferry crossing from Dagebüll, a small town in the north of Schleswig-Holstein. The ferry ride takes about an hour and a half, and depending on the time of year, you may have to wait in line for a while.

But once you're on board, you'll have a breathtaking view of the North Sea with its crystal clear waters and refreshing sea breeze. You can choose to sit inside the ferry or on the deck, and both options promise unforgettable views.

As you approach Amrum, the first thing you will notice are the impressive sand dunes that stretch along the coast. These dunes are not only beautiful, but also serve as a natural shelter from the sea, which makes them an important part of the island's ecosystem.

Special features of the island

Amrum is the ideal place for a North Sea vacation with children. The little ones can romp on the beach and are also often enthusiastic about the landscape and the history of the island. In addition, there is little car traffic on the North Sea island, so that any excursion routes can be covered without danger on foot or by bike.

Of course, this is also noticeable in the air conditions. It is a popular vacation destination for wave lovers and has several spas offering thalassotherapy treatments. The natural environment is also very diverse. While the Wadden Sea and almost endless beaches stretch along the coast, wooden boardwalks lead you into blooming heath and forest landscapes in the interior of the island.

Travel options

To get to the island, it is best to use the ferry that leaves from Dagebüll. Alternatively, you can also arrive with a stopover on the neighboring island of Sylt. This is particularly exciting for children, as you first fly over the Wadden Sea National Park before a 45-minute boat ride awaits you on the high-speed ferry Adler Express.

Sights of Amrum

The fresh sea air on Amrum invites you to do light endurance sports. Nordic walking is very popular here. Whether in an organized group or alone, there is much to discover on a tour. Visit the nostalgic island village of Nebel, for example, which reflects the East Frisian charm with its thatched houses. Here you will also find the well-preserved windmill, a landmark of the island.

Inside there is now a museum. Moreover, in Öömrang Hus you will learn interesting facts about the past, including the life of the ancient seafarers. In general, you will find historical buildings and excavations from past times all over the island.

The talking gravestones, which tell about the lives of the buried, should not be missed. A great photo motif is the Amrumer lighthouse, which towers classically red and white over the dune landscape. You can even climb it and be rewarded with a breathtaking view over the vast Wadden Sea. Afterwards you will go to the Kniepsand, the famous beach of Amrum.

The white sand stretches for several kilometers and thanks to its length it is something very special. If the weather prevents you from swimming in the sea, just visit one of the indoor swimming pools or the cinema in Norddorf. Among other things, we recommend the pub blue mouse, the most popular gastronomic institution on the island.

Vacation information

Preferably, many vacation homes and apartments on Amrum are barrier-free. For optimal catering, it is best to choose your accommodation in Wittdünn. The island village is quite urban in character and has several cafes, restaurants and stores. Furthermore, here you have the opportunity to book a place to stay in the immediate vicinity of the beach. For example, the vacation apartment Seeblick is located directly on the coast and is therefore well suited for a vacation with children.
